A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
Come have an adventure with Bama and hike the famous Route Frances on the Camino de Santiago in Spain! In the Summer I, 2024 term, ten students and two faculty will hike this thousand-year-old pilgrimage from St. Jean Pied de Port in southern France to Santiago de Compostela on the west coast of Spain (with two days in Paris and Madrid at the beginning and end of the trip). We spend our days hiking in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, with intermittent breaks to explore the Medieval cities of Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos, and Leon. On the way, the group studies the History of Medieval Spain, the History of the Pilgrimage, and Outdoor Adventure Leadership. Students take 2 classes and can receive credit in History, Religious Studies, Spanish, and New College. The two leaders of the program are awesome history professors and hikers, who have Wilderness First Responder and Outdoor Leadership certifications.
This is a life-changing experience that offers much more than any class can teach. You do not have to already be an experienced hiker or in great shape to do this program. Students are expected to take a one-credit hour prerequisite training course in Spring term 2024, where you learn all the skills you need to be confident and safe on the hike.
